Anyone who’s ever read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or watched the film adaptations of Roald Dahl’s classic story has fantasized about finding a golden ticket wrapped in a chocolate bar that gets you inside of a magical place.
Now that’s a real possibility for some lucky people in our area.
While you won’t get to see any Oompa-Loompas, you will get exclusive access to one of the biggest events of the summer…Mile of Music in Appleton.
Crazy Sweet candy shop and Mile of Music are teaming up for a fun summer promotion called “The Golden Ticket Giveaway.”
The big prize is two Music Maker passes to Mile of Music. While the majority of events at the summer music fest are free and open to the public, these passes get you inside special shows and also get you to the front of the line for crowded concerts that could be over capacity.
Special events the big winners can attend include the Songwriters Salute to the Rolling Stones, meet-and-greets with performers, access to the exclusive Music Maker lounge and many other perks. The passes are valued at $95 each.
Unlike Willy Wonka’s chocolate bar stunt – you’ll be rejoicing even if you don’t get the big prize. That’s because every chocolate bar is a winner.
Crazy Sweet, Mile of Music and other downtown Appleton businesses are giving away many additional prizes and coupons. You might open one of the limited edition chocolate bars and win a t-shirt, gift card, special discounts and much more – including free candy from Crazy Sweet.
The promotion is also a way to give back to the community. Proceeds will benefit the Mile of Music Education fund, which is part of the Appleton Education Foundation and operates within Appleton public schools.
Husband-and-wife proprietors Dale Ver Voort and Mary Kelley opened their candy store on College Avenue just over one year ago. Besides candy, you’ll also find natural, handcrafted beauty products from Mary’s brand Heal My Sole.
Dale says things have been going quite well, and he’s excited about the promotion, which he and Mile of Music co-founder Dave Willems came up with together.
“We were talking at an event last year about ideas for downtown businesses getting people into their stores during MoM weekend,” Dale says. “This sort of promotion was something I was thinking about since we opened, but I was looking for the right opportunity to do it – he provided that!”
Crazy Sweet asked R&R Chocolate of Coloma, Wisconsin to make and wrap 500 special candy bars just for the event. The chocolate bars go on sale June 20th – and when they’re gone, they’re gone.
Dale and Mary are proud to help promote the third annual Mile of Music, because all the life it brings to downtown Appleton gives a big boost to small businesses like theirs. The store is right in the middle of all the action – across the street from Houdini Plaza and next door to Cleo’s Brown Beam.
“Being newly opened last year, MoM gave us visibility and word of mouth advertising that you just can’t buy,” Dale says. “It was one of the best weekends we had in terms of sales, and by far the best weekend in terms of fun!”
Just like Willy Wonka, Dale and Mary are imaginative entrepreneurs. Dale says he always enjoyed Gene Wilder (one of our 40 Famous People from Wiscosin) as the original film version of the world’s most-recognizable candyman.
“At the time, of course, I had no idea that I would one day have a candy store,” Dale says. “What strikes me is how similar the personalities of the kids in the movie mirror some of the kids we have in our store from time to time. We have our Violet Beauregards and our Charlie Buckets!”
Mile of Music 2015 takes place August 6th – 9th all over downtown Appleton. Visit the festival’s website to find out about other concerts leading up to the main event.
